Levert's reputation caught up with his lineage a long time before this 2000 release. The only thing the child of an O'Jay and leader of his surnamed band of brothers has to prove on G is that he can conjure up new ways to make the ladies swoon. No need to worry on that front, as G is sure to satisfy the candlelight-dinner plans of lovers and lovers of love around the world. What separates Levert from the crowd of R&B crooners is what allows most cream to rise to the top-the unique flavour of the man's vocals. On G, Levert lets his sugar flow over various portraits of love in bloom, love on the rocks, and the requisite assertions of self. He blasts his way through the brassy, brash "Application (I'm Looking for a New Love)", growls out "Callin' Me", and breathes life into the serene "Nothin' to Something". By the time Kelly Price drops in on the jacked-up ballad "It Hurts Too Much to Stay", there's no turning away from the sweet softness of Levert and his confectionary G.
